Location, Location, Location

Location is often the most important deciding factor when a homebuyer chooses to purchase a home. Location determines how safe you feel, how convenient your tasks will be, and how quickly you can get to the places you need to. Location should be a factor, but should it be everything?

If you have school age children, location is very important. If you want your children to go to a certain school, they often have to live within the district. In this case, location is of the utmost importance. On the other hand, if you are a single person and live alone, location may be the most important factor for you because you want to come home to a neighborhood where you feel safe. To this end, location is also very important. However, if you’ve always wanted to live in a certain location, but can’t necessarily afford it, you may wish to consider adjusting your desires for a more affordable home. Simply put, location should be a deciding factor within reason. Speak with a qualified real estate agent to find the best location for you.

Seeing Yourself in a Home

Seeing yourself in a home before you purchase it is an exciting and uplifting feeling. By envisioning you, and perhaps your family in a home you are envisioning a life for yourself with a home that you can truly call your own.

With each home you view, try to picture yourself living there. Can you see where you would place family objects? Can you imagine which room would be your den or home office? Can you see where you would make possible additions or other improvements to the home? Placing yourself into the home makes it that much more real. If you can’t imagine yourself in the home you are viewing, it’s okay. Try not to force yourself into liking a home because it is in the right location, or at the right price. Chances are, there is a home that is more suitable for you right around the corner. Enjoy the excitement of the viewing process and try to imagine yourself in each home to decide whether or not the home is for you.

Where do you See Yourself in 10 Years?

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? This is an important question to consider when you are purchasing a home. By thinking about how far along you can plan into your future you can determine the price you can afford, and the location you would like to reside in.

When you think about the future also think about a few specific questions. Do you see yourself living in the same house? Do you think you will have a growing family? Do you see yourself investing in improving your home? When you ask yourself these questions, you are setting yourself up for greater success in your home. Talk with your real estate agent about all these (and other) questions. Purchasing a home is typically a long-term commitment, so if you don’t see yourself living in a location for more than 1-2 years or aren’t sure if you will have a family in the next five years, it may be best to hold off on purchasing a home. This doesn’t mean you have to have answers to all of life’s questions. However, the more prepared you are, and the better you can see your future, the more successful your home buying experience will be.

Choosing the Right Neighborhood

Location, location, location. This adage is especially true when purchasing your home. If you find a great house, make sure the neighborhood it’s located in is one that you can truly call home for many years. If your dream house is not located where you feel comfortable, your house will never become your home.

If you have a family, find a quiet neighborhood with lots of children for yours to play with. Usually, family neighborhoods are located by great schools, too. If you are a musician, and are often up late at night writing music and playing songs, then avoid quiet, elderly neighborhoods and find something more suitable. If you are a young couple that enjoys late nights out on the town, then a downtown condominium will surely make you happy. Lastly, if you’re new to town and don’t know many people, try to find a home near a park, or community center where you’ll likely meet young couples like yourselves. Consider your lifestyle when finding a new home, and weigh it against the type of neighborhoods you’re searching in. Find the home, and neighborhood, of your dreams.
